About Downtown Kansas City

Downtown Kansas City is rich in history and is thriving with arts and entertainment. It offers many opportunities to enjoy the performing arts, such as the Lyric Opera, Kansas City Symphony, Kansas City Ballet, Music Hall, and several theaters. The recently developed Power and Light District is an eight block neighborhood located in the heart of downtown. It offers exciting night life, restaurants, and a movie theater housed in the historic Midland Theatre. The District features a block devoted to entertainment venues and night life that also hosts free events, such as family days and concerts. Kansas City's newest arena, Sprint Center, is located next to the Power and Light District. The arena hosts concerts by world famous artists, sporting events, such as the Big 12 Championship, conventions, and special events. Kansas City is also home to a number of art galleries in the The Crossroads Arts District. The district's monthly "First Fridays" event offers free admission to its art galleries, and restaurants, several of which are located in the 120 year old Freight House building, display local artwork. Located near the Crossroads District is historic Union Station. It was built in 1914 and served as a working train station, serving 1 million travelers during World War I. A renovation was completed in 1996 and the station is now filled with restaurants, shops, a railroad exhibit, and a science center. Amtrak still delivers passengers to the station, and downtown Kansas City is one stop you don't want to mis
