Kansas City is also home to a number of art galleries in the The Crossroads Arts District. The district's monthly "First Fridays" event offers free admission to its art galleries, and restaurants, several of which are located in the 120 year old Freight House building, display local artwork. Located near the Crossroads District is historic Union Station. It was built in 1914 and served as a working train station, serving 1 million travelers during World War I. A renovation was completed in 1996 and the station is now filled with restaurants, shops, a railroad exhibit, and a science center.
